Left my Brain in San Francisco

Chris Johansen works in my building. I know this is true even though I've asked him a couple of times if he is Chris Johansen he's said "no". A stern, curt no and a rapid departure. He wears wire-frame glasses but changes into thicker frames after work. He goes outside during the day sometimes, always with people from the Russian television station downstairs. What is the method to this madness? Does he work at RTVI? Does he speak Russian? Who ever heard of daytime and partytime eyeglasses?

This isn't about Chris Johansen or his glasses. But he is important because he's curating an incredible SF gathering in NYC tomorrow which features a few favorites and the true subject of this post- TY SEGALL.

You know we love one man bands and Ty is a 19 year-old one-man tsunami we can all stand behind. Just a drum and guitar, unhinged Coachwhips energy but bits of melody that they could never really settle down enough to capture. There's a soul and heaviness to the songs that belies and transcends the vessel/genre. The old is made new! Incidentally John Dwyer from the Coachwhips/Oh Sees is putting out his album which sort of seems like going back in time and putting out a record by a similar (but superior??) version of yourself at the same age but WHATEVER who doesn't want to do that? Ok, good tunes for the weekend from the record and even more on HISSPACE. Show info below

Guinch Mix

Spending some time with El Guincho lately on a professional ear level, getting pretty deeply into his synthesis, realizing I heard some familiar passions if not specific sounds. Now I find this digi-old school (like 5 months) mix he did for FADER and it all comes together. Tasty jam!

Tanlines

About a month ago I took some friends to see some music organized by Frank of Hearts of Darknesses for his new night Bulldozier at Santo's. It was super good times but honestly all the music started blending together like a bowl of soggy oatmeal until this duo called Tanlines came on. Their sound is ebullient, beautiful, repetetive and simple in the most refined way. Just some minor knob twiddling, sensitive LFO use and clutch samples. I talked to them at EVR Fest and it turns out that they're a couple of dudes that have been around the block making musics for a long time, Eric was in Don Caballero and is currently in Brothers, and Jesse plays in Professor Murder.

(only the one on the right!!!)

A couple of awesome things about Tanlines....
A) The main place to find their music is on their youtube page. Since doing Cool Places Youtube has become my favorite record label. Sometimes I feel like the power of camera miniDV technology coupled with imovie makes youtube such a powerful place for music that it will make big production systems irrelevant. DUDETUBE
B) Their song New Flowers has become a soothing ointment for way too many harsh mornings, a pleasant and refreshing balm to generous apply to untold shame-overs. I love it I love it I love it.

Bulldozier happened again last night and is awesome and everyone should go. Look HERE for the next one. It is scary, crazy and totally awesome.

Until then listen to Newflowers over and over and watch the video over and over until you throw all of your Black Flag tapes in a compost pile and allow them to grow in a bushel of carrots and roses that will fill your room and your heart with love.

Space Is The Place

"The most valuable and treasured aspects of her career were those of personal growth: acquiring street smarts, becoming humble and compassionate, appreciating people from all walks of life, and discovering her talents and inner strengths, such as her lovely voice, her creativity, her originality, courage, tenacity, and her ability to find humor in the most difficult of situations. And she owes it all to that little Stomach Steinway found in a junk store back in Beantown, Massachusetts."

The Space Lady, AKA Suzy Sounds has spent the last few decades traveling between Boston and San Francisco, performing on street corners on all points in-between. Using a couple of casios, delay pedals and a little mouse amp she's made some righteously ethereal and beautiful sounds. Vashti Bunyan floating through space, guiding us through the gentlest acid-washed rave. I suppose her magic would've gone unnoticed had she not taken her game to the level and introduced us to her "internet-busking" (!!!!) style! She is still a presence on street-level but sharing her music on the internet has allowed a whole world of new people to enjoy her jams.

"I'm really quite honored and thrilled that you find my music worthy of your website. My whole approach of playing on the street was to make my music available to as many people as possible for free. Now the Internet has the potential to dwarf the persistent and diligent efforts I made over 20 years ... and keeps my music alive without the wear and tear on my poor aging body!"
