Janka Nabay- Bubu King EP 3/9/10 (free mp3/flac)

The week of big news keeps on rolling with yet another amazing 12"/digital EP due out March 9th.
"There was also an African apparition: Janka Nabay from Sierra Leone, wearing a straw skirt and singing and dancing to recorded tracks of what he said was a 500-year-old tradition called bubu music. The tracks were modern, and the beat, fast and skeletal and driven by bell taps, was unstoppable, demanding wider dissemination." -NY Times
Sierra Leone's Janka Nabay is the undisputed king and father of modern Bubu music. Until now, this music has not been recognized in the west. It has its origins in the Timini Muslic feasts that Janka attended as a young boy. He is the first to transfer Bubu Music in its modern popular form, an infection and frantic synthesis of traditional Bubu melodies and contemporary bass music. The tones are made from old keyboards and by blowing on carburetor pipes and bamboo shoots. As war escalated in Sierra Leone, Janka recorded one last batch of songs in Freetown's Forensic Studios and boarded a place headed for the United States. Once the biggest star of Sierra Leonean popular music he now lives in Philadelphia, working odd jobs and preparing to spread the word of Bubu music to the world.

Janka has a lot of incredible stories, some of which you can find here. But it is the timbre of his voice, the melodies of his music and the sincerity of his words that carry the heaviest weight. Needless to say, we're incredibly excited to work with Janka on this record. He's a really special, visionary voice making extremely unique and incredible music that the world needs to hear.
