Family

Family is beautiful. I read an interview in the L.A. Record a few months ago that stuck with me pretty intensely with Seun Kuti. Read it HERE. Seun talks about keeping the legacy of his father Fela Kuti's work going with his own music, not taking the general slash and burn to tradition approach to your forefathers' work approach but taking the lessons, celebrating the past and building. Seun says "They wanted everything to die with my father..." but he comes to term with the spirit by carrying it around and letting it song on stage with him rather than hiding it in a basement. "I am what I am"!

On that note, Femi Kuti another one of Fela's kids is putting out an album soon and it actually rips. Contrary to what Starbucks compilations (and on occasion this very blog) would have you believe, African music can be vital and exciting even when produced in a legit studio and given the room to make intentional beautiful music. Day By Day is loud, angry, funky and original- inspired in the best way by the legacy of Afrobeat but not governed into submission by it. Yes.

Skeletons on the Road

Some of the best buds a guy could ever hope for went and made one of the best albums I've heard in years. You see a tree and it looks so solid and strong, the base expands out into thick branches covered with healthy leaves....but you come down to the base of that tree, move some leaves and see a million bugs eating each other, crawling worms digging through rotting fruit, wet earth slippery to the touch dark and frightening to the eyes. MONEY is like that. Doubly beautiful and frightening, so stuffed with substance that it takes 50 paces backwards outside of your ears to see the fully realized whole- the righteous growth of months of nighttime labor. A totally fucked up masterpiece.

Sad Songs

What is a sad song in a language you don't speak? The sad heart reads a plaintive melody or a lonely horn as its miserable companion.

We've assembled a pretty brutal and beautiful collection of sad songs from all over the world for Cool Places Radio tomorrow morning. Just like the music, 8-10Am EST is pretty hard to stomach for most of you so I recommend signing up for the podcast at the show page and having it automatically appear in your world every Friday.
